Château Rieussec was founded by Carmelite monks in the 18th century and was awarded Sauternes (Cru Classe) status in the 1855 classification. The estate passed through many owners until 1984, when it was purchased by the Rothschild family, a large corporate group that also won the first estate Chateau Lafite Rothschild in 1855. With the family's corporate investment, Château Rieussec began to realize the potential of its terroir again, especially in 2004, when Wine Spectator named the 2001 wine as the magazine's Wine of the Year.

Carmes de Rieussec follows the winemaking methods of the previous owners Carmelite and selects grapes according to the same standards. It is made from 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, aged in oak barrels for 18 months, and produces about 6,000 bottles per year.
