Nutritional Components and Benefits:
Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids
Abound throughout the body, especially in the brain and eyes. As you might expect, these nutrients are essential for supporting healthy brain function, growth, and development, especially in puppies and kittens. But they also play a vital role in helping your pet's blood vessels, heart, immune system, and lungs function properly.
They are also excellent for supporting healthy skin and coat. Poultry is a good source of Omega-6 fatty acids, while New Zealand mussels and other seafood are good sources of Omega-3 fatty acids.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin
Glucosamine is a combination of glucose (a sugar) and glutamic acid (an amino acid). It helps in the formation and repair of cartilage. Together, they are ideal for building healthy joints and resisting joint tissue damage—especially important for our senior pets and puppies. Beef, lamb, poultry, and bones are good sources of these nutrients.
Taurine
An amino acid that is one of the building blocks of all proteins. Taurine is essential for maintaining normal vision, digestion, heart function, and a healthy immune system. Dogs can produce taurine, but cats rely entirely on dietary taurine. All animal proteins are excellent sources.
Calcium: Calcium builds and maintains strong bones. But it's also necessary for the proper functioning of the heart, muscles, and nerves. In the wild, cats and dogs eat bones and meat to obtain the calcium they need. We believe their thinking is correct, so ZIWI Peak recipes include ground bone to reflect what your pet would eat in the wild.
Phosphorus: Phosphorus is crucial for bone and teeth formation and is also essential for our puppies and kittens. It is necessary for making protein so that the body can grow, repair, and maintain cells. Phosphorus also helps the body produce ATP, the molecule the body uses to store energy. Phosphorus is present in bone building blocks, which is why ZIWI Peak recipes include ground bone.
Sodium: Sodium is beneficial for attention and mood, heart and blood health, weight maintenance, and fluid balance. Puppies and kittens need sodium to support healthy growth. Sources include meat, seafood, and salt. Magnesium plays a vital role in almost every process in the body. It is crucial for bone mineralization, muscle contraction and relaxation (i.e., movement), and neuronal signaling. A good source is New Zealand mussels.
Copper is essential for the absorption and transport of dietary iron and for the normal formation of hemoglobin. Sources include organ meats and fish.
Vitamin A helps with healthy eyes and night vision (especially important for cats!), as well as the formation of organs and structures in growing animals and immune function. Liver is a rich source of vitamin A, which is why liver is included in the ZIWI diet.
