The winery was founded by husband and wife team Gianni and Laura Brunelli in 1987. Gianni Brunelli has two main vineyards of different soils, altitudes and site climates - producing apparently different versions of wines, all however rich in character and verve. The vineyards not only look beautiful but are worked by hand in the main with great intensity – the farming is organic and sustainable viticulture is pursued.

The wines of Gianni Brunelli are particularly well known in the English market. This is partly because of the quality of the wines, and partly because of the instantly recognizable and highly memorable label – ‘Elvira with a hat” (the lady with a hat), a drawing by the American scholar Richard M. Goodwin from University of Cambridge.

A blend of Sangiovese grapes from Podernovone - which lies at 500 metres above sea level on the southeast hillside of Montalcino with a southwest exposure - and Canalicchio on the northern side of the village. The vines were planted in 1998 for the former vineyard, and in 1989 for the latter. 'Our Rosso is produced by the same grapeas as Brunello,' said Laura Brunelli. This new 2019 bottling is more concentrated than the lighter 2018, and more balanced than the warm 2017. This wine, traditionally aged in large oak vessels for one year, is extremely fresh and not without complexity. Red currants, wild strawberry, black pepper and juniper aromas are followed by a brightness of savoury red fruits on the medium-bodied palate. It has velvety tannins and refreshing, integrated acidity. A really great interpretation of the terroir.
